How to Pack & Prepare Household items for Self Storage
Self-storage is a great way to house belongings during a period of transition or to simply free up some space in your home. We want our customers to be aware of the proper ways to prepare and pack household or commercial items for storage.
From creating an inventory list to safeguarding items from the elements, here are some storage tips for preparing your your items for storage.
1. Electrical Equipment
All appliances, such as a refrigerator, should be stored with doors slightly ajar. Before detaching any electrical equipment, take a picture of the back of the item so you know how to reconnect the wires.
2. Files & Records
Pack books flat to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, use pallets to prevent moisture absorption.
3. Fabric Items
All items need to be clean and free from anything that may attract pests. Put clothing in wardrobe boxes.
4. Fragile Items
Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and at the top of boxes. Individually wrap, and do not stack heavy boxes on top of boxes labeled “Fragile”.
5. Furniture
Place all furniture on pallets or cardboard. Wrap with dust cover.
6. Mattress
Clean and air out the mattress. Thoroughly wrap the mattress in plastic and seal the plastic with tape.
